The Washington Monument in Baltimore is the first architectural monument ever created to honor George Washington, and the oldest surviving such monument. The monument was designed in 1815 by Robert Mills, who later designed the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. The monument, which was constructed of white marble, rises 178 feet and consists of three main elements: a low rectangular base containing a museum, a plain unfluted column, and a figure of Washington standing atop of the monument. The monument is located in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood and considered a centerpiece of the Historic District.
